What Does a Functional Nutrition Practitioner Actually Do? (And Why It’s Different)

So… What Exactly Are You?

I get that question a lot. And honestly? It's fair.

You've probably seen enough wellness content to know the usual cast of characters — the doctor who's great but has 8 minutes for you, the health coach posting smoothie pics, the dietitian with the MyFitnessPal handout. So when a friend told you about me, you probably thought: okay but what does she actually DO?

Let me tell you.

The Short Answer (That Never Feels Short Enough)

I'm a Board Certified Holistic Nutrition Practitioner and a Master Restorative Health Practitioner — which means I spent years in rigorous, advanced training in functional nutrition, passed a national board exam, logged hundreds of clinical hours, and never really stopped studying because this field moves fast and my clients deserve better than outdated protocols.

But credentials are just the ticket to get in the door. Here's what actually matters:

I look at the whole picture. Not your cholesterol number in isolation. Not your thyroid panel without context. You — your history, your symptoms, your life, your labs — as one connected story.

The Problem With "Everything Looks Normal"

Here's something that makes me a little crazy.

Conventional medicine is built around disease diagnosis. You either have a condition or you don't. Your labs are either flagged or they're not. And if they're not? You're "fine." Go home.

But disease-free doesn't mean healthy. And any mom who's been told her labs are normal while she's running on fumes, crying in the pantry, and can't remember the last time she felt like herself — she knows that "fine" is not the same as well.

The functional approach I use asks a different question: What should be happening in this body that isn't?

I use functional reference ranges — optimized benchmarks designed to catch what's off before it becomes a diagnosis. Think of it this way: conventional lab ranges are looking for fire. I'm looking for smoke. That's what lets us catch imbalances early, when they're still reversible, and build a plan before things go further sideways.

I also use lab testing — gut panels, bloodwork, food sensitivity tests — not just to read numbers off a page, but to read the story underneath them. The dysbiosis, the nutrient deficiency, the hidden inflammation. That's where real answers live.

You are one of a kind and need one of a kind consideration.

There Is Literally No One Else Like You

I mean that scientifically.

Bioindividuality is the concept that your genes, your biochemistry, your gut microbiome, your history, and your environment make you genuinely one-of-a-kind. Which means any protocol that doesn't account for you specifically is already missing the point.

This is why I don't do cookie-cutter. I build custom protocols based on your actual data, your actual story, and what your body actually needs to heal.

Where I Come In (And Where I Don't)

I'm not your doctor and I'd never try to be. I have deep respect for what physicians do, and some of my favorite clients are actively under a doctor's care. What I do is complement that care.

Your doctor tells you to "eat better." I tell you exactly what better means for your body, your condition, your life.

Where conventional medicine looks at isolated systems — this specialist for that organ, that specialist for this panel — I'm looking at how everything connects. Your gut affects your thyroid. Your stress affects your digestion. Your liver health affects your hormones. When you understand those connections, you stop chasing symptoms and start actually healing.

Why I Do This

I didn't find this work in a classroom. I found it in the middle of a crisis — actually, several happening at once.

My young daughter was practically crippled with digestive pain. Specialist after specialist shrugged, or worse, blamed it on anxiety. At the same time, my young son was handed a bleak diagnosis with a lifetime of medications as the plan.

I refused to accept it as the only plan.

So I went to school. I dug in. I learned everything I could about how the body actually heals — and I applied it. Both of my kids found their answers, and their healing changed everything.

Somewhere in the middle of fighting for them, I lost myself — chronic inflammation, body aches, hormonal chaos, exhaustion I couldn't shake. When I finally turned the same lens on myself, the same approach worked. I got my energy back. I got me back.

I believed in this work so deeply, I made it my life's work. I now teach and mentor at the school where I earned my Master Restorative Health Practitioner certification — embedded in the latest research, connected to a network of advanced practitioners, with hundreds of hours helping other clinicians navigate complex cases.

I know what it feels like to be dismissed. To bounce from provider to provider with no one looking at the whole picture. That will never happen on my watch.

What I've Actually Worked On With Clients

Every client is different, but here's a taste of the kinds of things we dig into:

The mom whose liver enzymes kept creeping up — we figured out why her body was struggling to process and detox, and supported it back to healthy function.

The woman who'd been told she'd be on blood sugar medication forever — we worked on the root drivers of her insulin resistance, and over time, in partnership with her doctor, she needed less and less of it.

The client managing an autoimmune condition who was told to just "watch and wait" — we used nutrition and functional protocols to reduce her inflammatory load, and she went from flaring constantly to feeling better than she had in years.

The mom who had whittled her diet down to three safe foods because everything else made her sick — we rebuilt her gut health slowly and systematically until eating felt normal again.

And then there are the everyday things that don't have dramatic names but make life miserable: the headaches that show up like clockwork, the joint pain that makes mornings dread-worthy, the heartburn that's been your nightly companion for a decade, the IBS that runs your social calendar, the exhaustion that no amount of sleep fixes, the brain fog, the mood swings, the weight that doesn't budge no matter what you try.

These aren't things you just have to live with. They're messages to be decoded. And I speak that language.

What This Looks Like In Practice

We start with your story — all of it. What got you here, every symptom, every "that's weird but whatever." I'm looking for threads. The connections nobody else took the time to find.

Then we test. Then we build. A real protocol, for your real body, that fits your real life.

You won't leave without direction. You won't leave feeling like just another intake form.
